On Thursday, Sept. 26, Hurricane Helene made landfall in Florida as a devastating Category 4 hurricane before making its way through Georgia in the early hours of the morning on Sept. 27 and downgrading to a tropical storm affecting South Carolina, North Carolina, Kentucky, and Tennessee — with deep, disastrous impacts across agricultural sectors.
In response to the devastation caused by Hurricane Helene, Tyson Foods has deployed its Meals That Matter Disaster Relief Team to serve hot meals, water, and ice to affected communities in Western North Carolina.
Starting this Friday, October 4, 2024, the team will be stationed at the Walmart Supercenter in Weaverville, NC, offering support to local residents who have been impacted by the storm.
Tyson Foods’ disaster response began earlier this week, starting in Florida and Georgia. The Meals That Matter team first arrived in Perry, Florida, serving 10,240 meals over two days before moving to Augusta, Georgia, where they provided 12,783 meals on October 1 and 2.
Now, they are focused on offering daily aid to communities in Western North Carolina, as the region continues to face the challenges left in the wake of the hurricane.
The relief efforts are being powered by Tyson Foods volunteers from Pennsylvania, North Carolina, Arkansas, and Mississippi. These team members are joined by local food bank partners and additional volunteers who are dedicated to helping the community recover. The team will serve meals at the Weaverville location starting Friday from 12:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. ET, and continuing daily from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. ET thereafter.
Tyson Foods’ Meals That Matter Disaster Relief Program was created in 2012. The program has responded to more than 30 natural disasters, delivering food, supplies, and volunteers to hurricane, flood, and tornado-impacted areas. Tyson Foods estimates that one pound of donated protein provides four servings, and the company remains committed to supporting relief efforts as long as needed.
