A Pueblo County, Colorado family is in shock after coming home last Friday to find someone had butchered their 22-year-old horse Nickel. The family told KOAA News 5 they believe the horse was slaughtered for human consumption as all the meat around the bones was taken as well as the animal’s heart and liver.
According to The Pueblo Chieftain, the perpetrator gained entry by cutting a front-gate lock. A semi-trailer lock was also cut, and part of a fence was taken down.
The family’s daughter believes Nickel, who served as her show horse through 4-H, Southern Colorado Horse Association events, and many saddle clubs, was targeted due to his slow moving demeanor from too much selenium.
Pueblo County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to the scene Friday and an investigation is underway.
