This is the worst fear for many farmers — that their livelihood and the animals that they’ve cared for are lost to tragedy.
More than 100,000 chickens died in a fire at Hillandale Farms in Pennsylvania, a commercial egg operation. Though the blaze that destroyed the 600-foot barn is believed to be accidental, the cause is still under investigation.
Local fire crews were called to the barn before 6 a.m. Saturday. Their focus was on keeping the fire from spreading to adjacent buildings. It appears that those structures survived unscathed.
