From the mud and rocks in the fields to the gravel driveways and metal machinery looming around us, there are all kinds of things that can make your feet uncomfortable in a flash. So I sought out a great work boot that can handle anything I threw at it — and the Crosby by Irish Setter checked every box.
Over the past six months, I put these boots to the test in a variety of work environments and weather conditions, and I am very happy with their performance. The Crosby is lightweight, waterproof and has a high-grip diamond-tread rubber outsole that is heat resistant to 475 degrees Fahrenheit (it might sometimes feel that hot at the top of your grain bin, but you should be good with this protection).
These boots were extremely comfortable right out of the box. After wearing them just a couple times — for short durations — I stepped it up considerably: I put the Crosby boot through a 10-hour work day on a construction site, and my feet stayed comfortable the entire day. The memory foam insole and midsole have significant cushioning, which makes the boots feel like they’ve already been broken in and molded to your foot.
The Crosby is well-constructed (double stitched in most areas) and has held up nicely in lots of tough conditions over the past few months.
I chose to go with the 5-inch Crosby with the high-tech composite safety toe, though this boot is available with a soft toe as well, in three different heights, and with a few style options for men and women. And as far as trusted brand names go, especially for those of us living well outside the city limits, you’ll be hard-pressed to find many at Irish Setter‘s level.
The bottom line, I think the Crosby is a versatile option as a general work boot. Whether you are working construction, on the farm, landscaping, hunting, surveying, etc., the Crosby offers an array of features that will keep your feet comfortable and safe. These boots carry a 4- to 5-star rating on Amazon (depending on style), and for this level of quality, they are reasonably priced between $160 to $200.
