Dairy Farm vocab: Steer A steer is a castrated male bovine. In simpler terms, a steer is a bull with no balls. In the picture above is the steers we are raising on the family dairy farm. We raise these for the sole purpose of stocking our freezers with meat for our family. You’ll notice that most of them are jerseys, and I will blame that trend on myself. Jersey Bulls are sadly worth close to nothing on the market. Typically when we sell them they are only worth five dollars. Me being a jersey fanatic, thinks they deserve more than that, so I convinced my boss to start keeping all of the jersey bulls to raise up as steers. I haven’t worked on the family farm for about 4 years now, and it looks like they are still keeping the jersey bulls haha. They get to live their lives in cozy group pens, bedded with straw daily, and of course, endless food and water. We castrate our bulls with bands. We call them Cheerios because that’s what they look like lol. Picture of the castration bander in the 2nd slide. The elastic bands cuts off the blood supply to the testicles and eventually they fall off. It’s always interesting finding dried up raisin looking things on the floor eeks ?
