With just a photo and phrase, a meme can say so much. And farming memes get right to the point of our lifestyles in rural America. The can be witty, funny, silly, or prideful, but at various times of the year, they say exactly what’s on our minds.
And, of course, memes are a great way of spreading word about agriculture to the public in a fun and socially engaging way. Do you think someone would prefer to read a long story about the rigors of farm life or see an image of a man loading hay with a clever quip attached? The answer’s easy, and the message is easily conveyed.

While we love how “snackable” memes are, they don’t always tell the whole story and can be used for nefarious purposes by people who don’t know anything about today’s agriculture — or don’t want to really know anything about ag. Many memes are made in good fun, but please be careful about memes that have highly political or activist stances unless you know that they are 100 percent truthful. So often, a scary image and apocalyptic wording is used as a tool of persuasion, and too easily, the facts get lost in the fear.
