National FFA Convention is an experience unlike any other

Published:

As I sit here reflecting on my week in Indianapolis at the 97th National FFA Convention, I’m filled with excitement for my future in the organization, deep gratitude for my advisors who made this incredible experience possible, and, admittedly, a bit of tiredness from the nonstop activities and fun we had. Although I’ve been involved with FFA for four years, this week was unlike anything I’ve ever experienced. It ignited a new fire in me to be even more active and to better contribute to my chapter and the FFA community.

Walking into the convention, I was instantly surrounded by blue jackets from all over. I thought I knew what to expect, but seeing it in person was truly something words can’t fully capture. To some, it’s just a jacket, but to me and countless others, it represents our future. I was thrilled to meet people from across the U.S. who share the same love and passion for agriculture. My goal was to meet someone from every state; I didn’t quite get there, but I’m determined to make it happen next year!

Listening to others talk about where they’re from and the unique activities their chapters engage in was fascinating. I was fortunate to make friends this year whom I hope to keep for many years. Sharing my love for showing sheep with others who feel the same was especially meaningful. We exchanged stories about the shows we’ve competed in and gave each other tips for success. Now, no matter where we’re from, we’ll be cheering each other on in every aspect of our FFA journeys.

I loved attending the different sessions throughout the convention. Each one was exciting, and I learned so much from them. But if I had to choose a favorite, it would be the final session, where I got to witness the announcement of the new National Officers. The energy in the room was electric—something I believe everyone should experience at least once in their lives. Knowing the countless hours and years of dedication each candidate put into their journey, and then seeing their dreams come true in that moment, was unforgettable. It’s a memory I’ll carry with me forever.

I also enjoyed speaking with representatives from the various colleges and tech schools at the expo. Each school had something unique to offer, and getting to learn about their programs directly from them was a fantastic learning experience. Coming from Florida, it was exciting to meet schools from across the U.S., including places like Colorado, Illinois, Indiana, and so many other states. I’m still uncertain about where my college journey will take me, but thanks to the National Convention, I now know there are far more options available to me than I had realized when I walked in. This experience has expanded my horizons and opened up new possibilities for my future.

I’d be lying if I didn’t say one of my other favorite parts of the convention was exploring and shopping at the Mega Mall. There were so many stores and vendors, with all of my favorites in one place! I definitely came home with more merchandise than I left with, and my bank account can attest to that! But it was so much fun, and it’s also where I met some of my new friends. While waiting in line, we swapped stories about our chapters and, of course, compared our purchases. I even brought back souvenirs for my sheep, Winnie and Daisie, so I’d say my shopping spree was a complete success!

One of the absolute highlights of the convention for me was the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to hear Temple Grandin speak. Her life story is incredibly inspiring, and I’ve always dreamed of being in her presence. Last week, I had the honor of making that dream a reality. I sat there for over 30 minutes, completely in awe, and honestly, I could have listened to her speak for days. You’d never guess that she didn’t speak until she was 3½ years old, was diagnosed with autism at age 3, and endured years of bullying and social isolation. Today, she’s not only a scientist, but also a renowned speaker on autism and animal behavior, a best-selling author, and a professor of animal science at Colorado State University. Her achievements are endless, and her life is a true inspiration to everyone.

The National FFA Convention experience is something I’m incredibly thankful to have been a part of, and I’m already counting down the days until I can attend again next year. Running on very little sleep was totally worth it — I didn’t want to miss a single moment. I’m so grateful to my advisors for making this experience possible for our chapter. Both of them have their own inspiring FFA journeys, and sharing this event with them created memories I’ll cherish forever.

If you’re considering attending the National Convention but aren’t sure, I have two words for you: DO IT! It’s an experience that every FFA member should have at least once in their life.
