Giving Tuesday — the Tuesday after Thanksgiving — was created in 2012 as a simple idea: a day that encourages people to do good. This year, we celebrate Giving Tuesday on November 30. For many Americans, we cash in on the deals for Black Friday and Cyber Monday, so it is rewarding to put our time and money toward organizations that help others. The National FFA Organization and its local chapters do so much for agriculture education by preparing its members to be the next generation of leaders.
Giving Tuesday is much more than a monetary donation — it is helping your neighbor, a stranger or simply making someone smile. For an FFA chapter and its members, it could be hosting a fundraiser, supporting their community or working with a charity near to their hearts. In addition to helping others, the National FFA Organization and its local chapters appreciate donations as well.
For example, California FFA Foundation designates Giving Tuesday to raise funds for blue jackets for students. Donations supply jackets to FFA students that may not be able to afford one. This year, your money can go even further since Blue Diamond Growers will match donations up to $25,000. Each $80 donation provides a jacket and tie/scarf. Virginia FFA Foundation said on Facebook, “An easy way to give and encourage others to join is through Facebook Fundraisers. Everyone can make an impact and help Virginia FFA Foundation always “say YES” to the needs of Team Ag Ed in Virginia.” They are hosting an individual Facebook Fundraiser here.
Iowa FFA Foundation emphasizes the impact of being involved in Iowa Team Ag Ed is truly everlasting.
“It is something that many people hold in their hearts for a lifetime. Having the opportunity to leave that impact is one that not many get. Help us make sure that students continue to be presented with opportunities to leave that everlasting impact. Check your local association’s website to see if they are participating in a Giving Tuesday project. If you would like to help your local FFA Chapter, get in touch with the advisor. Throughout the year, FFA chapters provide its members with amazing opportunities, many of which require money to participate.
Last year, Anna Mathis, the former National FFA Secretary also participated in Giving Tuesday. Mathis said, “I grew up in a small community that values serving others, so giving back has been a priority for me. Two causes that mean a lot to me are Feeding America and the American Cancer Society. As agriculturalists we know the importance of food, and that it affects development, cognition and so much more. Another cause close to my heart is finding a cure for cancer and supporting families with loved ones who are battling cancer. Many of my loved ones have fought the disease, and that’s how I’ve come to see the importance of organizations that support cancer research and care.”
