Research Farms and Forests
WVU has 13 farms and forests located throughout the state of West Virginia that are used for teaching, research and outreach. Located in Morgantown is the Animal Science Farm which encompasses 408 acres including the original 1895 dairy farm. During a typical year, the farm houses: 140 dairy animals, 60 beef cattle, 170 sheep, 800 chickens, 50 turkeys and 100 ruffed grouse. Students love the hands- on learning opportunities that this farm provides. Also popular with undergraduate students in the J.W. Ruby Farm located about 30 minutes from the WVU campus. This is home to our equine program offering emphasis areas in equine science and management as well as equine assisted therapy. Newly renovated in 2017, the farm has a 44 stall training barn, indoor and outdoor arenas and an educational center with classrooms, labs, and living space for student interns.
