FFA members celebrated Thanksgiving through service and learning

Published:

As the leaves fall and the crisp air signaled the arrival of Thanksgiving and the holidays to follow, FFA chapters across the country have been taking a moment to reflect on the values that unite them. Gratitude, service, and community are at the heart of the FFA mission, making this time of year an especially meaningful time for members and advisors alike.

Many chapters hold special meetings or events during November leading up to Thanksgiving to focus on gratitude, often incorporating it into their programs of activities.

The Springville Lisbon FFA chapter in Iowa has a Thanksgiving tradition of helping others. Members packed up community donations to help provide a Thanksgiving meal to families in need around their community in Iowa.

For 68 years, the Jessamine County FFA in Kentucky has been leading a food drive that exemplifies the spirit of giving during the holiday season. This year, the initiative continues with more than 20 boxes and bags of donations already packed and prepared for distribution.

The Twin Valley South-MVCTC FFA Chapter in Alexandria, Ohio, hosted its annual Thanksgiving luncheon on November 22. This event, a longstanding tradition, brings together FFA members and school staff to celebrate the season of gratitude and recognize the vital support teachers and staff provide to the program.

Durant FFA and Newsome FFA in Florida teamed up with alumni to make a difference for local kids. This initiative has built on last year’s success, where 150 bikes were donated to elementary school students in need. This year, the goal is even bigger — matching each donated bike with a helmet to promote safety.

Earlier this month, the officer team at Rocky County FFA in Nebraska took on the task of setting up a playground to benefit local students. This project, which required collaboration and dedication, was recently completed with the help of volunteers who generously donated their time. The effort underscores the FFA’s commitment to making a positive impact in their communities and providing safe, fun spaces for children to enjoy.

As Thanksgiving gives way to the festive season, FFA chapters such as Bok South FFA in Lake Wales, Florida, are diving into the holiday spirit with events that bring members together in celebration and camaraderie. Among these traditions, officer Christmas parties hold a special place, offering a chance for chapter leaders to regroup, bond, and prepare for the busy weeks ahead.

The holiday season is a time for giving and celebrating, and FFA chapters nationwide are taking the opportunity to launch fundraisers that support their activities and initiatives. Among the most popular and festive of these efforts are poinsettia sales, which not only add holiday cheer to homes but also help chapters fund scholarships, events, and community projects.

Poinsettia sales have become a seasonal staple for many FFA chapters including Milton FFA in Wisconsin, combining the beauty of the holidays with the spirit of supporting local agricultural education. These sales allow chapters to connect with their communities while raising funds for essential programs. Offering a variety of poinsettia colors and sizes, FFA members often showcase their skills in marketing, organization, and customer service.

The holiday season is not only a time for celebration but also for recognizing the hard work and achievements of new FFA members. For many chapters, this season marks the awarding of the Greenhand FFA Degree.

The holiday season is a dynamic period for FFA chapters, marked by leadership development opportunities and district contests that engage members in meaningful activities. These events are designed to cultivate essential skills and foster camaraderie among participants.

During these times, state officers, such as Wisconsin State FFA’s Amalia Draxler take time to visit with FFA programs around the state.

District contests kicking off around the nation mean members gearing up for competitions, and hosting districts opening their doors to members for events.
