Syngenta Group, which employs 59,000 people across more than 100 countries, has been recognized as one of the globe’s top five leading employers in the 2023 Science Careers Top Employers Survey. The company, headquartered in Switzerland, was the top agricultural company on the survey, put out by Science magazine.
Syngenta Group is one of the world’s biggest ag tech companies, with roots going back more than 250 years. The company said that this recognition reflects its commitment to its employees, research and development, collaboration, and innovation leadership.

Over the summer, Syngenta Seeds held a grand opening for its R&D Innovation Center in Malta, Illinois, which joins a connected, modern ecosystem of more than 150 Syngenta R&D and production sites worldwide and exemplifies the company’s $1.48 billion annual investment globally. Earlier this month, Syngenta also opened its first biologicals service center at The Seedcare Institute in Maintal, Germany, with the hope of addressing the growing farmer demand across the EU for biological seed treatment solutions.
For over 20 years, Science has surveyed its readership to identify and celebrate the best pharma and biotech companies as part of its annual Top Employers survey. This survey received approximately 6,800 responses in the spring of 2023, encompassing AAAS members, Science website registrants, Science Careers registrants, volunteers from a social media campaign, and others who were invited to participate through their human resources departments. Companies were ranked using a number of statistical techniques, including frequency analysis, stepwise regression, and discriminant analysis.
The results highlight what scientists and science-educated staff consider crucial for making employment decisions: respect for employees, patient focus, a science-driven and supportive culture, work-life balance, innovation mechanisms, and professional development opportunities.
Other agricultural companies on the Science magazine were Boehringer Ingelheim and Merck & Co., both of which have large and influential animal health divisions.
