Lee Meyer’s gentle Watusi-cross steer (pretty sure he’s not a bull) broke the internet yesterday after the story of his drive down a Norfolk, Nebraska, highway made national news.
In their hometown of Neligh, Howdy Doody and Meyer are local celebrities, appearing in parades and taking photos with folks who stop to talk to them. But, on Wednesday, the sight of the massive bovine seated in the passenger seat of Meyer’s modified Ford Crown Vic sedan traveling a four-lane highway had other drivers concerned.
It may have been the doody that Howdy Doody was doodying all over the car, though we can’t be sure.
Norfolk police were surprised to discover the driver with his unusual passenger and pulled him over around 10:00 a.m. Wedensday.
“The officers received a call referencing a car driving into town that had a cow in it,” said Police Capt. Chad Reiman. “They thought that it was going to be a calf, something small or something that actually fit inside the vehicle.”
The officer found some citable issues but chose to write Meyer a warning. The list of citable issues has not yet been released.
Meyer’s wife, Rhonda, told New Channel Nebraska that she received a call at work from her son to ask if his dad was in jail. While Meyer and Howdy Doody got away without doing any hard time, the arrest may have gone to their heads. Rhonda said, “Lee thinks he’s a movie star.”
A real-life Ferdinand, Howdy Doody joined the Meyer household eight or nine years ago when he was a weaned calf. The relationship blossomed from there, and now, the two take regular walks around the neighborhood, stopping to eat grass and smell the flowers along the way.
