The Veterinary Science Certificate Program is a nationally-recognized program designed for students interested in becoming veterinary assistants and perhaps, future veterinarians. The program is coordinated through Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service and provides a sound platform for students interested in pursuing an associate, undergraduate, or graduate degree in the veterinary science field.
During the course, students will complete 100 lessons online through web-based, self-paced, and independent study. Courses should be completed by graduation while completing an apprenticeship in preparation for certification. Apprenticeship programs include 225 hands-on clinical hours and 200 curriculum hours to reach the required 425 hours for certification and a Veterinary Assistant title.
Students who complete the clinical track are eligible to pursue an additional certification through the Texas Veterinary Medical Association.
The USDA NIFA Grant Opportunity through the VSCP is open to any student interested in participating who meets the qualifications.
In order to apply, students must be juniors or seniors in the current school year in an area that does not have a veterinary science program. Students will start the program on August 1, 2023, and will keep in contact and progress with VSCP staff during and after the course including monthly check-ins. The application is available here.
