It could be up to three weeks for the snow to melt and to know for sure, but the Colorado Farm Bureau estimates last weekend’s spring snowstorm in Southeast Colorado took the lives of thousands of cattle and destroyed hundreds of thousands of acres of crops.
In response, the CFB has activated its Disaster Relief Fund. One hundred percent of the donations will go directly to the farmers and ranchers impacted by the recent snowstorm.
The CFB said 50 percent of the U.S. cattle feedlots were affected by the storm. Death losses are estimated to exceed over the thousands at feedlots and on pasture. Beef supply is expected to be down in the near-term, with ranchers facing major financial losses.
In their press release, the CFB issued this request:
“Colorado agriculture is in distress. Commodity prices are low, stretching budgets and creating severe economic stress. The last thing farmers and ranchers need is to deal with the loss of farmland, crops, feed, and livestock due to a natural disaster. Any amount of support you can provide will go directly to those in need. Help Colorado farm and ranch families recover from this disaster as fast as possible.”
